Putumayo World Music's release India, is a CD collection that showcases India's rich musical variety, from classical and acoustic folk to Bollywood and lounge music. India's emergence as a global economic power has brought increased awareness of this extraordinarily diverse country's multicultural offerings, its music foremost among them. India's thriving popular music scene--an adjunct to the country's immense Bollywood film industry--is highlighted on this collection. The love ballad "Tere Bina," from last year's blockbuster Guru, was written by acclaimed film composer A.R. Rahman and features Chinmayee, the award-winning female playback singer (an artist who records the songs that actors lip-synch). Rajeshwari Sachdev's "Maavan Te Tiyan," is another hit Bollywood song from the film The Perfect Husband.

Putumayo Presents -- African Reggae [2009]

African Reggae is, in part, an homage to Bob Marley's powerful impact on African music, as February 6th will mark his 64th birthday. African Reggae features selections by outstanding African musicians who have built upon Jamaica's "golden age of reggae" in the 1960s and 1970s by weaving together traditional and modern sounds into a vibrant musical fabric. When reggae evolved from ska after Jamaica's independence in 1963, it quickly dropped its seeds in Africa, the true land of its origin. Pioneering Jamaican artists Desmond Dekker and Jimmy Cliff were African favorites in the 1960s, followed in the next decade by Bob Marley, whose songs of African unity and liberation and concerts in Africa inspired all of the artists on this CD. African Reggae vividly illustrates how African artists have kept the spirit of roots reggae alive from Cape Town to Cape Verde. This collection includes tracks ranging from the hit "Magno Mako" by Ivoirian Ismael Isaac to the melting pot brew of Burkina Faso's Bingui Jaa Jammy and from the Rastafarian-influenced sounds of Ghana's Kwame Bediako to the mystical kora-laced incantations of Guinea Bissau's Nino Galissa. A portion of the proceeds from African Reggae will be donated to HOPEHIV in support of their efforts to strengthen the capacity of African children who have been orphaned or made vulnerable by HIV/AIDS. Since it began in April 1993, Putumayo World Music has contributed more than $1 million to an array of international charities working in areas where the music on its CDs originates.

The title of this CD is mildly misleading as this collection is not strictly homegrown Latin in its focus. There are also tracks by Manzanita, a Spanish Roma (Gypsy) player famous for his rumba flamenca (this is what the Gipsy Kings play); Kaoma (a group famous--or infamous--for its high-profile participation in the lambada craze); and Ricardo Lemvo, a Congolese star with an Afro-Cuban style redolent of Kinshasa during the 1960s. That being said, it is unlikely that these 10 tracks will disappoint anyone. It's prime stuff, ranging from Colombia's Toto La Momposina to Oscar de Leon from Venezuela, to the Bay Area's own Conjunto Céspedes. Latin music is a complicated subject and many would-be listeners are too intimidated to try it. This album was compiled by a fan, rather than a pundit, with a naive enthusiasm that's certain to help beginners feel relaxed enough for further explorations.

Mo' Vida! charts a course along the cutting edge of Latin music, but what makes it so fascinating is that much of it doesn't originate in Latin countries. Ricardo Lemvo, from the Republic of Congo, now a resident in the United States, offers some reggae-inflected hip-hop. King Changó was born in Venezuela, but his home is in New York, and three of the artists here, including Sergent García, are from France. It doesn't mean real Latin music is unadventurous by any means. Cuba's Orishas have the best hip-hop track on the album with "Represent," and Xiomara Fortuna, from the tiny Dominican Republic, catches a wonderful reggae groove on "Juana la Loca" while keeping some exquisite polyrhythms going. What it boils down to is that the world is becoming one musical melting pot with everybody drawing from--and adding to--the music that moves them. Latin music means far more than salsa or rumba these days, and, as this shows in grand style, far more than the pristine Latin pop of Ricky Martin. Welcome to the 21st century, Latin style.

The diversity of modern Jewish music is a result of centuries of hard travelling and cultural interaction. The goal of this Putumayo collection is to present contemporary music as rendered by indigenous peoples of the Americas--North, Central, and South. It succeeds as an appealing and diverse affair. While the 13-track package showcases a number of acts nobly seeking to preserve musical traditions in a contemporary world, the album's chief attractions lie in the modern spins several acts put on their musical heritage. The album's first six selections are the most intriguing, starting with a mystical folk rave, driven by acoustic guitar and passionate violin, as conjured up by members of Kashtin, a group spawned by the Montagnais Indians of Quebec. Their language, Innu, may be undecipherable to most, but the group's earnestness and urgency is easily comprehended. An Inuit (Eskimo) duo, Tudjaat, casts an Enya-like spell with the vocals of Madeline Allakariallak. Apache member Andrew Vasquez delivers an image-rich, spoken-word soliloquy, followed by rousing pop-folk from Mohican Bill Miller, followed next by an inventive blend of acoustic guitar, traditional flute, and percussion from the Ute trio Burning Sky. As the album stretches to Central and South America, the selections become more traditional and perhaps not quite as bewitching to modern listeners. The cheerful interplay of pipes, charango, and handclaps on "Tema de Maimara" from Peru's Los Incas is a charmer for sure, yet it is this noteworthy project's earlier tracks that leave the most lasting impressions.

Bitter:Sweet’s ‘Dirty Laundry’ is very Amy Winehouse meets Jem with some fantastic horn blasts breaking up the beats and twiddles.
Gabriel Rios continues the horns theme, with a laid-back electro Puerto Rican sound and The Cat Empire who continue along a similar track made me realise how rarely you hear an Australian accent on a record.
Alice Russell is one of the album’s highs with ‘High Up on the Hook’ but my picks of a fairly fat crop though are Jehro and Thievery Corporation’s (Kid Loco remix) ‘Until the Morning’. In fact each of the artists is worth checking out in their own right, both those you know and those you’re yet to meet.
These are cool tracks designed for late night party cooldowns and it’s all very Putumayo, a niche they’ve carved out all for themselves. Lazy jazzy voices, a touch of hip hop and a modern cafe culture swing and I can’t get enough of it.

The nations that celebrate Christmas have never seen a snowstorm and their tropical climates would give a Eurocentric Santa Claus galloping prickly heat. The merriment of the season is universal, but each group observes the nativity in a manner that has relevance to their culture and environment. Most of the selections on this CD were gathered from warm-weather areas, with a few token Northerners tossed in. Old favorites appear in new guises; "We Three Kings" is given a chugging Cajun treatment by Michael Doucet, and "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" is warmed up by a steel drum orchestra. Carols turn up in a variety of forms, but there are also toasts to the past and coming year, appeals for national pride and unity, and greetings to friends and family. The detailed liner notes complement and embellish the experience. This educational garland of holiday songs will make an ideal stocking stuffer and enliven any holiday gathering.

This flowingly well-sequenced collection of semi-acoustic tracks, some of which have a smoothly mainstream FM-radio feeling while others are more roots-oriented, is just the thing to unwind after a stressful workday or get the weekend off to an effervescent yet relaxed start. South African troubadour Vusi Mahlasela and Senegalese pop icon Diogal are heard to great effect, as are Congolese stars Faya Tess and Lokua Kanza, entwined in a lusciously Cuban-rumba-influenced duet. A lesser-known Cape Verdean songstress named Gabriela Mendes swings her way through a typically dance-like ditty and Dobet Gnahoré of Ivory Coast makes a similarly strong impression. A previously unreleased tune by Angelique Kidjo of Benin rounds the set out; every compilation should ideally offer something new, not just retreads, so this is definitely a good thing. Another important selling point: a portion of the proceeds from this album will be donated to Mercy Corps in support of their efforts to help victims of AIDS and the civil war in Darfur, and to Oxfam America and Oxfam Novib's "Make Trade Fair."
